FluShing in the home. Empty
PostSubject: FluShing in the home.   FluShing in the home. EmptyWed Jun 19, 2013 4:45 pm

Hey guys, registered on here a few months back I think, but never posted.
To make a long story short, I am a long time car enthusiast, auto x'er, musician,  and father of two (1yr old & 4yrs old) from Flushing NY. I've spent most of the last 5 years behind the wheel of my 91' B16A swapped Civic hatch, but sadly the birth of my second child caused my wife to inexplicably hate my car...so it had to go. I was, and still am heart broken.

As if that was not bad enough, my wife inherited an 02' Volvo S60, so her lame-ass, base model, 1997 bright ivy pearl, 1.6 litre 5 speed got handed down to me.

"Don't worry" She said, "it is only temporary, until you find another project car you like."

I figured she was right, so I started looking for something interesting...some kinda older Japanese sedan. Had to be 4 door, and 5 speed, so I started looking for mid 90's G20's, Maximas, or EG Civic sedans...and the more I looked, the more I realized that I did not want to take on another (unfamiliar) old car, especially when the old, 4 door, 5 speed car I was already driving had proven itself to be pretty much the most bullet proof car I had ever owned and perhaps ever built.

This is where you guys come in! I ain't no youngn' anymoe...and gas ain't cheap...so I don't see any point in trying to make this car go "fast" but I would like to make it a little more fun to drive...
I'm sure I will have plenty of questions, and look foward to sharing.

Hey log

It never surprises me the names of towns in your country was in Lancaster Pen in 02 and found a place called Intercourse now I'm no prude and not sure if it was a Amish thing but it did create a bit of a grin.
Good luck on your next project.

Sucks about your Civic. I know how much fun those B16s can be. lol first time I drove in one and VTEC kicked in I was like What a Face

Do you guys have strict smog rules over in Texas? If not you should consider swapping in a 4AGE. They get the same mileage as your stock motor and it also puts out around 150-170HP. Same as the B16 I believe. Not to mention the added perk of Toyota's bulletproof reliability..

Another fun factor would be installing coilovers. Since you have a family you might want a relatively comfortable ride so for our cars I'd say go for 4k front and 3-4k rear. Or a cheaper route for fun would be getting some Tein Stechs along with a thick sway bar.

Anyways, welcome to the fam!

I've got a T-shirt from Intercourse PA. I don't know if you noticed but the neigboring towns are, Bird in Hand PA, and Blue Balls PA...So I guess Intercourse is the best of the three! and yes...it is an Amish thing.

Texas? No, I'm in NYC, and my civic never passed inspection either (helps to have a friend who does inspections)
I really know nothing about swaps in these cars, and what they entail, but that is for another day. For now I'm more concerned with handling, and a tach lol.
This is not really the main family car, so as long as I can get two kiddies in the back seat, I don't care what it rides like.
Did a few searches, but didn't find much in the way of sway bars, gonna have to replace a few bushings before that I'm sure!
Anyway guys, thanks for the welcome!

welcome to the club.

im guessing you have a tach-less speedo, you can either get a speedo with a tach and it should be plug and play, or you can get an aftermarket one and its just as easy to wire it in.

for best handling, would recommend coilovers, but they aint cheap.

TRD did sway bars too for the ae101

got any pics of your corolla?

Yes...sadly I have no tach. Figured it was most likely plug n play. Is this true for all years?
I've been trying to convince my wife that she needed one for years, but now the car is mine, so ne is going in ASAP.
See 'em all the time on ebay, but 90-100$ seems kinda steep. Unfortunatley not alot of junk yards in NYC, so I may have to figure out another option.
I will get pics up asap.

Good luck on your next project.

At least Flushing is an Anglicisation of a Dutch place name (Vlissingen), rather than an English word that used to mean something innocuous but has had the origins lost in time and now means something completely different and often unfortunate (in the case of Intercourse and the nearby Blue Ball)

If it makes you feel any better, there are some places here that sound pretty silly - Cumnock (Come-knock), Watanobbi (What-a-knob-e), Woodenbong (Wooden-bong), Kundabung (Kunn-dah-bung), Dunedoo (Dunn-e-doo)...

Thank-you Hiro. I didn't want to go into too much detail concerning Flushing, but Vlissingen is also Dutch for "running water" which Flushing has plenty of...unfortunatley as anyone who has visited knows, it very often does smell like a toilet.
I also get what you are saying about innocuous or innocent words, and the meanings and usage changing constantly over time, but it seems an odd coincidence to me that Blue Ball, Intercorse, and Bird in Hand are three neigboring towns with such suggestive names.
